Badal Sircar (1925-2011) was a leading Indian playwright and theatre director, was a major figure in the development of modern Indian plays. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the highest honor in performing arts by the Government of Sangeet Natak Adademi Fellowship in 1997.
